and big money raised by mitt romney since the debate. his debate performance clearly caught the attention of both republicans, who were worried about the trajectory of his campaign and new voters and the campaign is reporting since the debate performance they've raked in more than $12 million, and, just today, the romney campaign undertaking a national teleconference, and phone banking exercise, made another 2 million contacts with what they hope to be new republican voters. it is a $12 million boost into the debate for mitt romney and stands in the face of staggering numbers from the barack obama campaign reporting last month they collected over $181 million. that does not rival what obama did four years ago in october, before the 2008 presidential election, but is still a massive amount of money, last night, talking to the romney campaign and the big fund-raising dollars the obama campaign was putting up, romney staffers smiled as if to suggest they might top it. >> arthel: and also a statement, romney pushing his tax policy, this weekend, right? >> reporter: of course in the wake of th

. but the 2012 version of that theory now is that mitt romney cheated in the debate against president obama this week not by having somebody feed him the answers through an ear piece but rather by bringing the illegal crib sheet on to the debate stage with him. you see, previous debate rules have set out very clearly that, quote, no props, notes, charts, diagrams, or other writings or other tangible things may be brought into the debate by any candidate and yet have a look at this damning evidence. this is at the very beginning of the debate on wednesday night and as you'll be able to see clearly here what is that in your pocket? mr. romney very clearly pulls something from his right pocket and he pops it on to the podium in front of him. violation. violation. according to the conspiracy, complete with the grainy, slow mo youtube videos, this is mr. romney cheating. now he must have been working from note cards the entire debate. the explanation from the romney campaign is mr. romney was not pulling notes out of his pocket. he was pulling out of his pocket a handkerchief. sure enough, a lit

, first of all, how much does this employment number blunt mitt romney's debate momentum? and do you think the white house is going phew, relieved at this? >> if not popping champagne bottles. two-ways in which this number was so useful to the white house yesterday. it got the unemployment rate below 8% which has been kind of a line of demarkation. the romney folks have made a big deal about it being above 8% for so many months all through president obama's tenure. the other thing is the timing. i mean, all the reviews from the debate has been so negative for president obama. and this just automatically changed the subject. at 8:30 yesterday morning we stopped talk thing about the debates and started talking about improvement in the jobless numbers >> yes. david with respect to the conspiracy theorists out there, mitt romney is not latched onto all threat rick. but could all this talk, this talk, could it damage him in the long run? i mean, in some ways all it does is just highlight the fact we're talking below 8%. >> absolutely, alex. i think that the romney campaign didn't respond to tha

governor romney to set the debate or control the debate or use facts that aren't real. he needs to sit there and look governor romney in the eye and say listen. you sit there and tell the american people they're not better off. tell the 5 million people that have jobs today that they're not better off. tell the 37 million people who have health care and are going to have health care that they're not better off. tell the soldiers that are coming back from iraq, back from afghanistan that they're not better off. the president needs to do a full throated defense of his presidency and not allow governor romney to define his presidency for him. this helps significantly. >> and, chris, quickly do we hear mitt romney continue to say that president obama doesn't understand the economy? does this put him in a box? >> well, to some extent but governor romney is going to use his statistics to paint his picture and we saw that. and i think this is one of the things that i would, you know, strongly recommend to the obama campaign. romney was a blizzard of statistics in that debate but a lot of them

've been calling mitt romney a liar, falsehood for the last 48 hours after the debate. >> okay. but you don't have any independent evidence, you didn't get evidence between the time the numbers came out this morning at 8:30 and 8:35 when you tweeted. you didn't use that five minutes to gather any actual information or evidence -- >> no. >> -- that there was corruption in these numbers? >> chris, i tweeted last night that i predicted it would be at 7.9. >> okay. and why did you make that prediction? >> because i guessed that's what would happen a month before the election. >> you guessed that the chicago guys would do this? >> well, i don't want to put words in the mouth of what i said last night. but that's what i did. >> well, this morning, i just -- let's go over the tweet one more time. allen west and some of the real screwballs out there are following the band you're leading and the banned you put together is that there's corruption here, the chicago people, the guys around president obama got to the bls and manipulated the numbers. >> chris, stop it now. i've reviewed 14 businesses thi

romney, debate and what debate? oh, right. wednesday. the first presidential debate. we got a rigorous macro economic lesson that day. but by the end of the week, the only number that mattered was 7.8. that's because the unemployment rate released yesterday is the lowest since 2009. the bureau of labor statistics announced fresh revisions for the summer jobs numbers. in fact, july and august saw a combined increase of 86,000 more jobs than were originally reported. and the household survey showed is an exceptionally strong month with 873,000 more employed americans last month than in july. president obama was back on the trail yesterday trying to temper his enthusiasm. >> today's news certainly is not an excuse to try to talk down the economy to score a few political points. it's a reminder that this country has come too far to turn back now. >> mr. romney, of course, saw it a little differently. >> the reason it's come down this year is primarily due to the fact that more and more people have just stopped looking for work. >> good try but actually this month, the rate fell because ame

here because both candidates want it, but it really seemed in the past few days since the debate, that mitt romney lit up to say it's working for barack obama, i'm going to make it work for me. >> would he seriously borrow a position from someone else? >> they want it because they need it. you don't get elected unless you appeal to moderates an the middle class. that's why the 47% comment hurt so much. that's why the poll numbers started breaking hard against him when it started really resonating through the heart land. he had a great debate. he's got an opportunity to do that. >> so, he should just clear that off the table. >> some of those problems are baked in his cake. >> jamal, jump in here. if you're a democrat in this country, not thrilled to see him suddenly approaching so hard in this area, but barack obama was kind of playing him a little bit, but seriously, i'm not sure if mitt romney may have said middle class more than obama. >> you know, what john just said is absolutely right. he had to get here. this is where american elections are fought, in the middle, the gener

. snafulogagous. you heard that mitt romney wants to get rid of federal funding for pbs. it came up in the debate. there's been a lot of talk about a certain big bird since then. >> i'm going to stop the subsidy to pbs. i like pbs. i like big bird. i actually like you too but i'm not going to keep on borrowing money from china to pay for it. >> don't worry. somebody's finally getting tough on big bird. elmo, you better make a run for it. governor romney is going to let wall street run wild again but he's going to bring the hammer down on sesame street. >> first of all, full disclosure, i know big bird. i'm sorry to be a name dropper but it's true. not like i go to dinner with him. i don't want to overstate it. i haven't been over to his nest for drinks or anything. but i have gone to his workplace. >> this is anderson cooper in for oscar, the grouch who's on assignment at the dump. i'm here with two legendary grouch newscasters, dan rather not and walter cranky to discuss today's letter in the news. the letter g. say hello, dan rather not. >> i would rather not. >> i wonder what dan rather not is
